32GB card only has 29GB memory???

12 replies 10743 views Edited Feb 17, 2012

Ok so I went into settings to check my free memory. Why is it showing 29GB available on a 32GB memory card. I havent download anything. The only game I have is the hard copy of little deviants. I also did the 1.60 update. So where exactly would the missing 3GB be?

This always happens, it needs like a reservation amount for things.

Take your PS3 for example, I bet if you checked that, you can only use like 70GB our of a total 80GB.

Its not reserved perse. its that Manufacturers always calculate space differently & no matter the size it will always be smaller then advertised.

Memory always has 93.01% of the total advertised. 32GB - 6.99% = 29.76. The same for games on the Playstation Store. Take Uncharted: Golden Abyss for example, it's 3.2GB advertised but the game is actually 2.97GB. 3.2 - 6.99% = 2.97. That's how it always works with all memory.

They round it up to 32 because it's part of the binary number system. Everything is counted by factors of 2. 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024 etc.

It has always been this way, Sony is doing nothing new here. This is just how storage devices work.

I dont mind the 29 GB but it is not advertised anywhere in the specs. I have supported the vita from the beginning but this seems like a blatant example of false advertisng. I paid a pretty penny for the 32 gb memory card and when i found out 3 gb were missing i was enfuriated. at the current price of $79.99 for the "32gb" mem card thats about $2.50 per gb, I feel i was ripped off of $7.50. Imagine if the 4gb memory card only had one gigabyte! The 29gb fact is not acknowledged in the specs or anywhere on the box or online that i found. i do understand memory is not exactly as advertised but it is advertised somewhere on the product specs as to what the physical memory would be.

This is not false adversting.  If you research this in more depth, it has to do with manufacturers and SONY using different binary

systems in calculating total storage (Base 2 vs Base 10).  This is the standard practice in all Storage Devices.
