I remember discussing this before. most are in agreement that its a level of some sort. as you fight, you "level up" and unlock things specific for that character.

The stars werent there in the previous beta. dont know why they are there. i guess no one bothered to watch the video because they're referring to the level, which isn't even a star.. (it was in the last beta)
Let's say you win 3 matches in a row with Samus, the number beside Samus will increase after each match ( points of some type ), those points wipe off from every char every time the game is restarted
