You should wiki thr Shinto mythology starting izanagi and izanami, and transition to Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi, and Susanoo which transitions to Susanoo, the villager girl (she was a princess, tho in the game she was the one Susanoo loved) and Orochi (and Kusanagi). It's amazing how close they kept a lot of the story and it made me appreciate Okami (and Naruto) a lot more.

I know bits and pecies of it, but nothing in deatail. I remember reading somewhere about some guy killing a 8-headed dragon that eat girls from a village by getting it drunk then chopping off its heads. I will wiki it.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Izanami#section_2

Start with Izanami, then Izanagi (whose tale is brief but relevant) and then Susanoo because the game is truthfully about him and his fears in the Kojiki, but they give Amaterasu the lead role and add a little here and there.

I'll find a more detailed translation once I get home. That's enough to get the gist of it. Also, Kagutsuchi was a dragon who burned Izanami alive on his way out the womb. Izanagi cut him up in a fit of rage and from his blood, the other gods were born. But that's not exactly relevant. It's just really **bleep**ed up.
