Just wondering, because people said that 20 was small (Bare in mind this is a first game in a possible series, 20 is not easy to achieve on your first try) but how is 22 characters not that Kat and Emmet are coming for free?

A 20 character roster is not small. Not to evoke comparasons but Brawl has 39 characters, several of which are varients. Melee had 25 and that was enough variety to keep it going for quite a while.
Also 20 characters are a lot if you think about trying to master all of them. After the honey moon stage, I usually end up with a 3-5 character rotation for myself.

I do agree that 22 characters does seem like it's not that much. However I thik they are going to add way more DLC once this game is released.

The thing about the roster size, it that by comparison to other fighters (Street Fighter, SSB, MvC, Mortal Kombat) it is small, but in terms of vairety, it is top class.
Take it's closest rival, Smash Bros. It has a HUGE roster of characters, but at the end of the day other than some minor examples (Ness, Olimar) they all win using the same methods, which is melee attacks and the odd basic projectile while only really changing size, strength and weight. PSASBR on the other hand is much more diverse in the characters, to the extent where a fightstyle with one characters fightstyle doesn't match any other quite frequently in the roster (Sackboy, Raiden, Sir Dan, Radec, Fat Princess, Sly). There are the odd match (Jak/Ratchet, Toro/Parappa) but they are much more few that Smash.
So in conclusion, yes it has a small roster, but one of the most diverse.

Nope. Never did considered it small when it was 20 then & not even now when there is 22 with the DLC. But I already know there was users who couldn't accept the roster.

The thing is.... you're comparing it to a game that is years old & comparing to another game that is too many years old. Melee had a variety of characters but not a variety of movesets because of "clones". I could play as Mario or Dr. Mario, that's cool, but that's a clone.
Brawl improved better but they can still be seen as "clones" such as Fox/Falco/Wolf or even Link/Toon Link.
Also, try to compare a roster in this year 2012. Try to compare fighting games that aren't Brawl. I could compare one that came in 2012 & it has the exact same numbered character roster as PS All-Stars (till early 2013 where it'll 22 Chars).

22 seems like a nice, large number for a first time fighting game of this style.
Hell, 20 seemed like a nice, fitting number.
