Auto-suggest helps you quickly narrow down your search results by suggesting possible matches as you type.
Innovating a new character is harder than going with what other people found. If you want to play against more people though, I would suggest trying to play people in 1v1s or 2v2s. The game is much more balanced in those modes and therefore you'll see a bit more character selection (Although atm Raiden and FP do seem to be the most popular as well), whereas some characters really have a lot of trouble functioning in FFA.

I played Ranked matches yesterday for an hour or so, and only ONCE I had a match with different characters, Heihachi, Sir Dan and Toro. (and I got disconnected in that one of all matches.
)
It's just boring to fight the same four, five characters all the time!
The good side is it gets really easy to predict what they will do thus evading all their attacks.
(finally got the "this is living" trophy yesterday. XD)
To the guy two posts above, yeah the lag issues do get really frustrating though. Thankfully mine's gotten better in the last few days.
