PSASBR combos vs SSB combos

8 replies 469 views Edited Nov 26, 2012

Hey everyone,

So not here to start a fight about either game because no one cares.

But I do have a question about combos in each system.

So in a lot of interviews, reviews, and player impressions, people always

talk about how PSASBR is more combo oriented, and it has combos unlike SSB.

But I don't get how? There aren't any explicit combos in either game, both limit the

combos to a (direction + button) combo. Neither game (but more importantly PSASBR)

has a combo more complcated than that, like direction + button + button doing something

unique as compared to direction + button (wait) + button.

So what am I missing? Aren't the complexity of combos in both game the same?

I don't know my SSB that well, and I'm new to fighting games, so maybe I'm missing something.

Thanks,

Ninja_Panda

It definitely has more combos than smash, smash is more reactive and timing, worked into some simple combos, this games requires a little more set up, play the combo tutorials and you'll see it's more like a regular fighting game. example:

Heihachi

^O(air) >square Square(Dash)(Immediately) ^Square ^Square

Basically a short hop to toss a pin, just as the pin hits you connect with a punch that knocks down, as he stands you slide in with an upper cut and finish off chasing him up with 2 increasing upper cuts.

There are a lot of other options you can take the combos depending on the timing and where the enemy tumbles to.

Granted, some charaters are less combo heavy and play out more like smash characters, it leaves it open to different play styles/types.

Ah okay, I haven't gotten a chance to play those yet.

So are there not similar set ups in SBB?

Like what's the difference between what you are describing and this:

I really am just curious, I must be misunderstanding something

SSB's knockbacks change with the damage, it makes a combo system like PSASBR basically impossible.

PSASBR wins by far. Just because Marth is the only character in smash bros that CAN combo! XD However he has 1  combo that stands out, the ken combo which was made by the #1 Marth player in the world. Its so great that it is litteraly legendary and when used its an instant win! Smash's "combo" system is less pronounced. They don't give you combos to try out for yourself, and the vast majority of Smash combos are things that you'll see only professional players pull.

PSAS's combo system gives you examples and lets you more easily make combos for most characters. Really, Smash combos describe how long you can keep somebody tied up or whether you can KO them during it, and PSAS combos describe how much AP you can get from consecutive hits in that one combo. PSAS has a more literal combo system.
