Well... I think the main flaw in comparing these two characters is the style of art. Ness's design is simplistic, his face is round (like a beach ball), you can barely see any of his hair, and his face is devoid of what I'll call "facial diversity". (cuz I don't have a better name off the top of my head) Theres only a small nose, a mouth and large black soul devouring eyes and nothing else.
Whereas with Dante, you have a pretty good view of his hair, the shape is more "human", the art is more realistic, you can see more facial features such as wrinkles and eyebrows and the art is more realistic overall.
Until i saw the sword of course. Ness uses bats.
