This is going to be more informative than it is blaspheming. I'm personally irritated when people go on rants about how someone's shadow looks similar to something therefore its this and that.
Lets start with what makes a 'good' speculation, as well as what what makes it a valid point. Lets take the recent Aftermath trailer.
This is an image of the Sly cane. Seen left, its a solid gold staff, which is exactly what it is in-game as well. Sly's cane is in plain sight, can be seen, and can be accurately linked with secondary evidence like pictures from Google. This is a respectable format of how to speculate, because its 'there' and we can 'see' it. Nobody can argue with it. Its 'right there'.
Now, what would be bad evidence? Lets take the hair, for example. From where I'm sitting, it kind of looks like her hair is a giant T-Bone Steak. Now, using this I would try and say that its Tiny from Crash Bandicoot, as the guy is actually kind of built like a T-Bone steak, and therefore Crash made it into the game. No. This is silly. Nobody would in any way take me seriously. Its not an actual part of the trailer and is simply 'there'.
