When I play Ranked matches that's just what it feels like. It doesn't feel as though I'm escalating to a higher level other than the belt ranks.

Maybe because I don't check the leaderboards?

I don't really feel like it's a tournament, nor do I really feel like the level of my competition is constantly increasing.  As Superbot admitted, the matchmaking system is definitely off.  There have been multiple times when my partner and I, who are both black Belt 175~ get paired against blue belts, yellow belts, and the occasional white belts.

It still technically is a tournament however, because you're supposedly playing to get the number 1 spot on the Leaderboards.

ranked matches are just plane random: 4v4, items/hazards on, timed matches?? can't get any more casual than that.

To me it feels as this games actually lacks a competitive mode agaisnt "random players".

Sure you can 1v1 your friends with your personal ruleset, but that's about it.

Quick matches allow you to play with stocks ecc but you can't turn off stage hazards and you're forced to play 4v4 or 2v2 (and QM don't count as ranked even though they are placed in torunament mode).

Having played in a bunch of different tournaments, for a bunch of different games, I can easily say Tournament Mode is nothing like an actual tournament. Not that there's anything wrong with this, but it's nothing more than ranked matches..
