The analog stick nowadays is more often the default for gaming. Back in the early PlayStation days there was no analog stick on the controller, so some games defaulted to the d-pad and some had uncommon button combinations compared to today's standards.
Usually though I go straight for the analog stick and see how the game works with it. The odd right-moves-left and left-moves-right camera direction of the Ratchet and Clank HD Collection (for example) is not my preference - though, I kept it as is and had to apply that playstyle towards progress.
1st Rule of Playstation Allstars, leave your SSB logic at home... the game will punish you for tying out smash logic!
(Aka back throws, back airs, and I dunno if people know this... but you can't ledge grab either)
