I understand little sister.

 

but come on, Sam, Kuma, Kat..

 

They could have used that money to buy moar third party characters.

The deals made were likely that Sony could use a few third party characters from each game represented, including at least one character and at least one minion; it's likely that this didn't affect any cost of licensing characters.
