how do you diagnose the cause of ylod?

does anyone know how to diagnose the cause of ylod?  ie: how to tell whether it is the fan, harddrive, or a problem with the board

unfortunatly no.  The fact that the yellow to red blinking light sequence can indicate multiple different problems makes it hard to diagnose exactly what went wrong.

If you are VERY patient then you can...Perhaps if you think its ur HDD then replace it with a new one and see if thats works..or if you think its your Fan does it get really hot within 1 - 2 minutes? just some examples

The YLOD (Yellow Light Of Death) is caused from the CPU and GPU seperating from the motherboard. It can also be caused from a bad Power Supply but 90% of the YLOD is caused from the CPU and GPU seperating from the motherboard. and only 10% is a Power Supply Failure.

start with the hard drive. start it up with no drive installed. If it still does the YLOD then reflow the board. When you start it back up, listen if the fan is working. This is the only way to solve your question.

Some times the HDD has nothing to do with it. But it is very possible.
