YLOD after 2.5 yrs of abuse

My ps3 got the ylod yesterday as i was dling the 3.41 update.  I got my ps3 in december of 07 with my sony rewards points and some extra cash. I was in the middle of dling the update when my ps3 just shut off by itself and would turn back on. It starts stays green for 3 seconds the light turns yellow then back to green for a split second before shuting off and blinking red. The fans work did the hold eject flip the switch thing. the thing is done.

So today i call up expecting to be able to do a trade in for a refurbished slim model. I got the 40 gig CECHG01 model but unfortunately my model did not qualify despite the fact that it was never opened and i had the proof of purchase from sony directly.

So i can send it back for 150 $$ repair or go spend 400 on a slim. No point in spending 150 on something thats just gunna break again. The slim would have been nice for 150 but i dont see myself dropping the full price which is messed up. You would think they would offer me some type of discount on the unit or maybe a free warentee upgrade on the purchase of a new unit but i get nothing while people who got the original model only months earlier than i got mine get a refurbished slim at more than half the price.

So in the end i lose 15,000 reward points and 300$ after 2.5 years of use with no exchange offered or discount on a new one. Wow sony do you really care about your customers or is that just what your pr department says?

Sorry, you got screwed. Whatever you do, dont get it fixed, just live without a ps3 or get a slim.

thats just how a warrenty works.  it doesnt last forever. once it runs out, you need to pay for repairs you want to have done

Send it in to gophermods. They will repair it and send you your exact PS3 with all of your data still on the HDD.

Pretty sure the "exchange for a slim" option was only for the PS2 BC units: 20GB, 60GB, and 4 USB Port 80GB.  They never offered it on the 2 USB port models.
