Time to swap out the 60GB hard drive. Questions!

22 replies 7 views Edited Aug 18, 2009

It's time to swap out my PlayStation 3's 60GB hard drive for a bigger one. I was wondering what your opinions are on swapping for a 7200RPM drive - will it hurt the PS3 in the long run, considering the increase in heat generation?

Also, what about a Serial ATA II drive (3GB per second)? Will this be of any benefit?

I tried Googling this, but not many articles seem to explain the advantages/disadvantages of higher-capability hard drives. Currently, I'm looking at the Western Digital 5400RPM SATA family of hard drives at NewEgg.

Thanks in advance!

A while back I installed a 7200 RPM 320gb Hitachi drive into my 60gb PS3, haven't had any problems with it. As long as your PS3 is properly ventilated, I wouldn't worry too much about using a newer 7200, though 5400 will do just fine as well.

7200 rpm will work. Gives you a MINIMUM upgrade (a little faster) in game load times, screen loads, copying of media (music, videos, images), and CD rips. not worth it IMO.

make sure to get an external drive also so you can back up all of your data. that is the easiest way.

I've got several several years of PC experience - I just needed some second opinions before making the switch.

Also, do I have to "deactivate" the hard drive before removing it, and when restoring to the new drive, will I be able to use the same trophy data?

I think you are supposed to sync your trophy data then swap the drives.

Just sync your trophies before swapping out the drive and back up your data to an external drive.

Hey, another question:

If I have more than one account on my PlayStation 3, do I have to run the backup utility on all of them? And if so, will they all get their own folders on my backup drive?

Thanks again!
