Ps3 or Ps3 Slim? Which is more reliable?

28 replies 665 views Edited Jul 8, 2010

I am aware that ps3's are more reliable then xbox 360's

I personally do not care about how the console sounds or looks, I care about how long it will survive

Will the ps3 fat ( 40 gig recertified ) last longer ? Ps3 FAT Recertified

Or will the ps3 slim (120 gig NEW ) last longer ? Ps3 slim 120 GIG New

Also..Newegg says that this is a ps3 slim http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16868110045

But they did not mention if this one is a ps3 slim ( but it looks like one and its 120 gig ) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16868110056

So you want to know wether a system that has been out for over 3 years is reliable or the one which has been out for less than a year is reliable? This question will be better answered when the slim has had atleast 3 year life cycle.

Im a original US Launch 60GB owner, bought on 11/17/06, 3 years and counting my system still runs like new, and quiet as always been. Never crashed or gave me any problems.

Its impossible to answer this question, I would say the slim will have other problems down the road because of its smaller size, and cheaper parts. Thats just my oppinion.

Then you have lots to learn.  And nowhere is there proof of such statement.  The slim might not have the YLOD problems that seems to be apparent in the early fat models, but that does not mean they wont have other problems.  THe slim is composed of cheaper parts, add a smaller size to such a power house..things wont necessarily be reliable.  Give it 2 more years and well see what the slim is made of.

ScarFace do you think I should get a PS3 40 GB though? I honestly dont care about the memory, or if it can play ps2 games, I just want to know if the 40 GB is just as reliable as the 80 and 60 gb fats.

We don't know if the 120 gig is reliable or not yet because it hasn't been out long enough, but what we do know is that the fat is pretty unreliable after 2.5 - 3 years.

If I were you, I'd go with the slim.

I think it's more a matter of how you take care of your system and a little bit of luck. I have heard about many phats breaking but have also heard of many slims breaking. I think the slims run a little cooler due to better chip tech. My launch 60 gig runs just fine, it's a little bit louder than it was before but not really a big deal.

Yes, if you can get a pristine condition 40GB for less cost of a slim, go for it. If not, go for a slim with a brand new warranty.

I know of several people who bought the 40GB's on release, and they are still running strong and quiet as ever. As a matter of fact, I also own a 80GB non b/c (which is the same as a 40GB but with larger hdd), and its still running strong and quiet as always.

Its really hard to tell you which PS3 is reliable because each model was released at a different time. The slims being new, people will recommend them to you because they come with a warranty which is important to most people. However, i have seen plenty of problematic slims in the past year so its hard to say which is more reliable. You have to give the slim a couple more years to see if, or what problems they have.

Great choice as well.  If you ever do fall for the memory space craze, just remember its very easy to install a upgraded hard drive.  They run pretty cheap compared to a couple years ago. You can get a WD 500GB HDD for less than $70 these days or a 250GB for like $30 or $40.  Thats why i think its a little silly for people who spend $350 +tax on a 250gb slim, not knowing they could easily buy a 120 gb slim, and have twice the space of a 250gb PS3 for the same money.
