@ne1atall yes that is correct i cant access safe mode and you'd think that like any other computer hard drive there would be a recovery disc sony didnt think this through

If something is wrong with the HDD, then you can replace the HDD with a new one.

The system, assuming it is in otherwise working order, will prompt you to re-install the System Software, or Firmware.

To do that, you download the system software (you can use the link at the bottom of every page that says PS3 System Update 3.40 Get Update, and download and save the software according to the instructions. The PS3 will then prompt you for the rest.

There is no need for a PS3 Recovery Disc, as it is just the software you can download (which is relatively small). But if the problem is not the harddrive, then system recover disc wouldn't help you.

Oh, I'm sure Sony thought it through. A recovery disc would be an *extremely* easy hook for hackers to utilize. Having that option would circumvent a pretty sizeable chunk of their system security.

A recovery disc wouldn't be any more difficult or easy to hack than the current System Software update files.

Sure it would. The System Software has to validate new firmware before authorizing its installation. A recovery disc would perforce supersede this validation, because any problem resulting in an inability for the PS3 to fix the issue internally would also likely prevent the validation. Even if this weren't a problem, Sony would have to issue a new recovery disc for each firmware, since they wouldn't want to allow firmware rollbacks via recovery discs.

All the systems that do validation are on the PS3 hardware itself, not the HDD. A recovery disc, which is what is going to write to the HDD, is not going to supersede any validation checks.

So if that is messed up enough that it does not work, a recovery disc is not going to make a difference.

If by hardware you mean the NAND, then sure. But the NAND is programmable. If the NAND isn't corrupted, then there'd be no need for a recovery disc. If the NAND *is* corrupted, then in order for a recovery disc to even work, you'd need to have a preliminary BIOS that allowed you to bypass the NAND and boot from the disc.

And if there was a preliminary BIOS and it did have its own validation, you'd expect that validation to be set at manufacturing time to allow only one disc, which would mean you'd be able to rollback your firmware by using that disc. It'd be ridiculous to have a preliminary BIOS and have it be reprogrammed at the same time as the NAND, because it would have just as much chance of becoming corrupt as the NAND.
