So GamesCom is this week and we all have been waiting on all these rumors to be confirmed or debunked right?
Here is a list of things that have been rumored and some even confirmed -
- PS3 Slim
- PS3 Price Drop
- New PSN
- Backwards Compatibility Updates
- Firmware 3.0
- New Games, etc.
Now this is what I have found out. Thus the title ( I apologize if this has already been posted but I haven't seen it).
I have a friend who forwarded one of his e-mails to me from PS Asia. One thing that has been rumored and now is confirmed. A new PSN of sorts is coming. What it will entail, I am not quite sure.
The important part (and only first line) of the e-mail read like this-
"Dear PlayStation®Network Member,
Sony Computer Entertainment Hong Kong Limited shall launch a new upgraded PlayStation®Network Membership service on 18th August, 2009."
Now there were several rumors of a new PSN coming on the date of the Sony conference at GamesCom - August 18th. There we have it, at least Asia is getting an upgrade of some sort. As for N. America, well we have yet to hear about that. However one interesting thing is that the PSN will be down on August 18th for a while.
Moving along to price cuts now. Several retailers (especially in Europe) have been slashing prices of the PS3 all over the place. I doubt this is as of a result of an official MSRP price cut however that does look promising.
For instance (and this has yet to be confirmed) -
Several reports now say that those price cuts are coming to N. America as well. Up to $100 off of the regular price. Several online retailers and European retailers both online and in stores have already dropped the prices from 40 to 100 Euros and USDs off.
One more thing that is talked about is backwards compatibility with PS2 games. A new update or a PSN PS2 section. Many of you say, "oh it's not going to happen" or "it's not possible."
Many of those same people didn't know that even right now there is at least one PS2 game already on the PSN store. A little game known as Buzz Jr.

Originally a PS2 game, now available on the PSN store. So IF and that's a big IF we do get a new PSN in N. America, who knows, maybe that could include a PS2 games section. Now wouldn't that be lovely?
I wont even touch the subject of the slim console because, well that's a dead horse that has been beat one too many times.
So those are just a few things I wanted to touch on and see if anyone else had any input on the matter. The main thing I wanted to talk about was the e-mail from PS Asia talking about the new PSN. I didn't see any talks of it recently. Hopefully I didn't just waste everyone's time if I missed it. I apologize if this somehow is against forum rules or if it has been posted already. =/
Can't wait until the conference on the 18th!

Good to be a PS3 owner, and, maybe even soon to be for some.
Also, a good time (well, not really but better now than a few months ago) for my system to YLOD again. Price drop, slim (hopefully). good news Tuesday cant come soon enough for me!

A slim I can care less about, the PS3 'fat' looks so sexy now.
It will look weird all curved and slim...
I would like to see a drop however, even though I'm a proud owner of 2 years. (December 20th, 2007 <3)
A drop would increase the members on PSN and move a lot more systems.

The Asia part was already debunked by Sony. What you referenced included a statement that made this new PSN sound eerily similar to XBL including a Pay-To-Play plan. Sony has confirmed that online gaming will remain free in ALL regions and that this letter is a hoax.
Actually no. That is not what I was referring to. The e-mail was legit. The e-mail indicated nothing of the sort of having to with costs or and plans. This letter was legit and came straight From: PlayStation(R) Asia (no-reply@asia.playstation.com.hk)
It's still in the inbox. Has all the contact info that anyone could ask for.

There is no ps3 slim.
Like the PSP Go! was? right?
Anyway, lets not talk about the slim. That was just a little side note to the topic. <.<
