I have been using the same setup for my PS3 for some time now, it has a designated ethernet cable. Today, after no changes on my end that I can think of, a 'an eithernet cable is unplugged' error, that blinks every 2 seconds, appeared, and wont go away. The cable allows me to get online when I plug it into my laptop, but I cannot get online with the ps3. Just for kicks I unplugged my modem for 10 minutes, no dice. Any suggestions?

Does that some connection, same cable, still working with your your laptop when the cable is connected to it?
If it works with your laptop but not PS3, maybe the Ethernet port on the PS3 is broken.

dchao, yes it still works with my laptop. After playing around with it a bit more I figured out I gain and lose internet access very quickly, so I tried to download the latest psn update, and it would go very slowly, as it gained and lost connection, eventually timing out.

Try wireless. If you don't have a wireless router, can you borrow one from your friend?
Wireless router is cheap, if it works, it might be cheaper than send your PS3 for repair.
