Dont know the answer but I do have one question.

Do you have to do the 3.56 system update? I just bought my PS3 yesterday and havent done the update. Do I have to do the update? Or can I run my PS3 without updating with the 3.56?

I would really appreciate the help. This is coming from a new PS3 owner. Thanks.

If you have a question it is because you don't know the answer, right?

Reason I asked my question was there have been ALOT of complaints after people get the 3.56 system update.

Do I have to do the update?

When you upgrade your HDD, you will need to have the latest firmware version on a flash drive to re-install the system software.

What order should you go in? I honestly have no clue. People have had lots of issues.

It would seem the best thing to do is try upgrading the HDD right away, and have the latest firmware flash drive.

Or, update firmware, then upgrade hdd then update firmware again.  Though, this may give you trouble if the glitch is still in the latest firmware file.

the ps3 is NOT like a pc, it does NOT store the operating system on the hd, it keeps a backup on it" just in case" the firmware is stored on the mother board on some sort or memory chip, whenever you swap your hd, the ps3 will formate and be the same as befor exept what ever crap you personaly but on it, ie, pics or music or game saved data. so just swap it and get on with ur life

No, actually, the PS3 keeps its System Software on the HDD.

The original systems up to the first revision 40GB system kept the system software/firmware on flash chips on the motherboard.

After that, the flash chips' size was decreased, and only stored a small portion of the system software (like 16MB) on the motherboard.  The rest is stored on the HDD.  So when you swap HDDs, you need to reinstall the System Software/Firmware.

So, just wait for the next update before upgrading the HDD right?
