7.1 is just more speakers...hdmi supports it, optical doesnt.

but doesn't  optical create better sound?  And do you even need optical if you have 7.1 as opitcal doesn't support 7.1?

no, why would you think that? you would want optical inputs if you want to plug something in that doesnt have HDMI.

I will not accept your friend request, so dont bother.

no, optical and hdmi are both digital. hdmi supports the 7.1 spec, optical doesnt.

if you want 7.1, you cant use optical

so the sound will not be as good as 5.1? with optical i mean

dude...no. the sound is the same. hdmi and optical are the same quality. but hdmi supports the 7.1 spec for more features (and in some cases, HD audio, but you dont need to worry about that)

becuse optical is older, and many receivers dont have HDMI

HDMI is newer, and for obvious reasons, supports newer specs.

Optical is a great digital connection it can run hundreds of feet without degrading in quality at all,

Your recievers digital connection is probably only a few feet (so electrical connection via HDMI cable is just dandy).

Fiber optics is a very important technology for running long distances without signal degredation (so it was marketed as the best thing in the universe, before HDMI came out) and it is good, still.  If you want 7 speakers get the HDMI, if not then your good to go with optical, or coax digital.

you'll need to connect one hdmi cable from the ps3 to the receiver, and then another hdmi cable from the receiver to the tv.
