i dont mind the waiting. id rather wait now for a few minutes, than have longer load times in the future.  i mean, isnt that the point of installing data, is so you dont have to wait as long to load?  so just start the install, go take (or leave) a #2, then come back.

I like your thinking. Sounds logical to me.

lol thanks. i think i just had a game do this to me. it was uhhh.  Unreal tournament 3.  it even said. installing game data so load times wont be as long,  not in those exact words, but, ya know what i mean.  so if i didnt do this, would that have meant i gotta wait longer for the map to load as eveeryone else has started playing?  so i said screw it, and did the install.   its a great feature i think.  BUT, it does piss me off when i get a new game like that, then ya gotta go thru....UPDATE FOUND  and wait 45 minutes for that, than go through the install, but other than that i like it.

Re: Installed to Complain

I don't mind the waiting, but from what i've read some blu ray games HAVE to install. The Blu Ray drive(while more precise than dvd) has a slower speed than it. 2x i think it is, while dvd has 8x, but can't nearly hold as much. So the install eases down on the load times because without the install you'll be pulling your hair out in frustration of how long it's taking to load.

I hate that too. I still wish there was an option to hit triangle on a Game Data Utility file on the XMB and select a "Check for Update" option. That way, you an do it without the disc and keep up to date a lot easier. Nothing kills wanting to play a game more than having to install updates each time you pop the disc in.

After being on here for over a year, I have seen one too many threads on this topic: "Why does it have to install? It takes so long. It's stupid. Moooooaaan!"

People complaining about games and content having to install on the PS3. It boggles my mind that people even gripe about it. The data installs once, and you NEVER have to do it again (unless it gets corrupted of course, which is rarely). With that said, most installs take less than two minutes. Is two minutes or less REALLY that much time to warrant complaint? Are people ageing that fast? Did I miss the memo that waiting 2 minutes for something is bad for your health?

Patients are people that wait to see a doctor.

And I agree with the OP, but Bioshock took a significant amount of time to install.

The thing yourself and others like you on this thread are missing is that there are games on Par with games like MGS4 or better than DMC4 that require no install at all. Games like Uncharted 2, Killzone 2, and Resistance 2 require no install to play them. While other games (Especially Capcom) can take upwards of 18 minutes to install give or take.

Now you maybe asking me next "What's the big deal it's a one time thing?" I have to say time is valuable, the last thing you want to do is install the game when you put it in your PS3. We haven't had to do any of this installing nonsense since the NES and before that on Atari and similar systems to that. Along comes the PS3 and we start seeing installs. To boot many of the PS3's predating the Uncharted Bundle have less than 100 gigs. If games are sucking up between 2 to 6 gigs just to run the game without option then there is a real problem here, especially if the rival systems require no such install. That's a real kick in the balls because hard drive space comes at a price in addition to the 60 dollars you pay.

I personally don't care, I actually do the optional installs and kind of wish MGS4 gave me an option of installing the entire game or doing the chapter by chapter installs. However I can understand peoples plight with forced installs as they should never be in the first place. We rarely get any benefits from a forced install, DMC4, Bionic Commando, and Resident Evil 5 are clear indicators of this. When we do get a beneficial install it tends to be an optional one, Soul Calibur 4, Valkyria Chronicles, etc.

What's more annoying is when something goes wrong post install requiring a re-install for what ever reason. This past month I've had an issue with gears of War on my PC forcing a re-install twice. Anyone who has installed GoW will tell you that it is an annoying process to wait through with updates to boot. A few times we've seen people delete game installs and downloaded updates to help remedy things like game not booting, system crashing, and crackling sound. When all they wanted to do in the first place is play the damn game.

So from a quality standpoint and frustration standpoint I don't see mandatory installs to be a benefit to the PlayStation community unless we see something so amazing that requires it. Since KZ2 and U2 are visually on par with MGS4 and surpass games like Heavenly Sword, I don't want to see another PS3 game install ever unless it is optional.

Re: Installed to Complain

PARTIAL agree.

MANY, MANY, MANY downloads take MUCH longer than TWO MINUTES.

Demos for instance, take sometimes over half an hour, depending how big the demo is.

And not all of us have lightning fast high speed. (mine is fast but not "can download 5 gigs of data in 5 minutes" fast :smileytongue:)

So I agree that people should stop complaining about how long it takes, but I don`t agree that all downloads take just a few minutes. (Keep in mind you have to INSTALL the data after your done downloading)
