External Hard Drive

10 replies 705 views Edited Apr 17, 2010

Just wondering... I'm getting a 1000GB External hard drive from a friend for free and i was wondering if it will work on the ps3. What I mean is, can i put games on there (PS1 games, Demos, etc)... It is an EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE. See, I've had my 60GB PS3 since 07 and im starting to run out of space (10GB left) and i just bought both gta 4 episodes so that took so space too.

********EDIT: can install games on there... is that possible?

You can't install games on an external drive.  You can only use it to store media (pics, vids, music) and game saves (at least the ones that aren't copy protected).  You can also use it with the backup utility.

Well... i dont have any videos, musics, and pics cause i use my ps3 only for games.... but i guess the back-up utility will be pretty useful...

One quick question: I've been searching on google, and some sources say that the ps3 will only read 32Gb out of the 1000Gb thats in the external hard drive.... is that true?

those people do not know how to format a drive in FAT32 without using windows. windows will only allow a FAT32 partition to be 32GB. google HP usb disc format tool, it will allow you to format as FAT32 in whatever size you want.

The internal HDD is easily upgraded, and internal drives that fit are relatively inexpensive:

160GB Internal HDD for $40 (this is the size I currently have, and I have 81GB free)

250GB Internal HDD for $50

320GB Internal HDD for $55

500GB Internal HDD for $80 (frys.com has one on sale for $60 through next Saturday, but requires in-store pickup)

640GB Internal HDD for $95

1TB (1000GB) internal HDDs exist, but they are too 'fat'.  The internal chamber of the PS3 only accepts a height of 9.5mm and the 1TB HDDs are currently 12.5mm.

Just don't forget to back up your internal drive (XMB System Settings > Backup Utility > Backup) before upgrading the HDD, because there is no way to retrieve your data from a removed HDD.

The other poster is correct, if you use a tool like the HP USB Format Tool you will be able to use the entire drive.

No problem.  Before you buy, shop around for possibly better prices, though $50 is about the standard for a 250GB HDD.

After I posted that earlier, I decided that I could use a new HDD as well, so I pulled the trigger on the 500GB at Frys.  Luckily, they have a store here in town.  I am currently restoring my system to it.  Anyone need a 160GB?  I no longer have need for mine.

I couldn't get Swissknife to work on my Windows 7 Machine.  Ended up formating the Tera in linux.
