Can I transfer data from one PS3 to another?

25 replies 9934 views Edited Mar 6, 2008
I currently have a 40 gig but am considering getting the MGS bundle when it comes out. Can I transfer the data from the old PS3 to the new one and if so how difficult is it?

I guess you can use a usb and transfer it. But be aware, that only some kinds of data can be transferred. Press triangle on what u want to transfer, and select Copy and it will give u options on where to transfer it.

Correct, you will be able to back up your game saves and themes, but you will set your new ps3 again.

A good rule of thumb:

If you can transfer it to a memory card or external storage device, then yes, you can move the file(s) to a different PS3.

You cannot swap hard drives or backup 1 PS3 and restore it to another.

I had to transfer my save data, and I've played most of the PS3 games & the only one's I saw with copyright protection were Rockband, Eye of Judgment.

Would I be able to save downloaded PSN games onto the new hard drive?

I just recently added another PS3 to my arsenal, and that answer was NO

only game saves (that arent PSN specific) themes, and a few trailers.

good news is tho on the new system you can redownload all the PSN store stuff at no cost as long as you login with the info you originally purchased it with

I believe someone tried answering this question but it wasn't clear.

Is it possible to take a Hard disk from your PS3 (saves and games and whatnot) and put it into another PS3That is, will I keep  my saved games and DLC such as Rock band tracks?

The reason is that if ever I decide to sell my ps3 I'd like to keep my saved data and downloaded content.

the answer is no you cannot take your hdd from one ps3 and install it in another. As soon as you put it in another ps3 it will require you to format the hdd to be used with the ps3, in turn losing all your save data. The only way is to back up your files and restore them to the new ps3.
