All model PS3s are backwards compatible with PS1

20 replies 17017 views Edited Feb 22, 2011

I have seen alot of threads where people are mistaken about backwards compatibility in the PS3.

I just want everyone to be informed and get the most out of their system so...

ALL PLAYSTATION 3 SYSTEMS ARE COMPATIBLE WITH PLAYSTATION 1 GAMES

...as for PS2 you need an older model with the harware to run them....bummer.

So if I put FF IX in my PS3 slim 120gb I can play it.

Since when have all PS3's been backwards compatible?

Is this due to a firmware update or some patch? I'll have to try it I guess.

Doesn't make sense to have the systems PS1 compatible but not PS2.

They always been compatible with PS1 games (all PS3 systems, old and new).  It is software emulation for all of it, it seems.

The PS2 emulation required hardware as well; in the original systems, CPU and GPU of PS2, and later systems, partial GPU chip of PS2.  The systems after that lacked any PS2 hardware at all.

Was not related to Firmware or Patch, but actual physical hardware changes.

Yes it does because they still make games and sell systems for it.

No.  No patch was ever needed, and it makes perfect sense.  The PS3 always emulated the Playstation/PS1 in software.  So do the slim PS2s, for that matter. The original Playstation is 15 years old, and the technology in it was already several years old when it shipped.  Emulating it in software with modern hardware, or even six year old hardware, is no problem.  The PS2 is much more powerful than the PS1 was, and while it is possible to emulate the PS2 CPU in software on a PS3 (the 80GB Motorstorm bundle PS3 did this), it has never been possible to emulate the PS2 graphics processor in software on a PS3.  The Motorstorm bundle PS3 had the actual graphics processor chip from the PS2 included on its system board.  All PS3s made after that don't have any PS2 hardware, and therefore cannot play PS2 games. It is as simple as that.

Thats really lame why would they make the ps3 work with ps1 games when they are really old games and u cannot play ps2 games what a bummer.and it dont make any sence!!! ps3 should play ps2 games not ps1 games , it makes more sence.

Because initially they had this "we support BC" stance.  Then, when they decided to try to sell more PS3 games for the PS3 and make the system cheaper, they removed the PS2 hardware.  PS1 games were all software emulation, so they didnt need to remove any hardware that would stop the PS3 from playing PS1 games.

It makes perfect sense.  Physical hardware costs to play PS2 games, software emulation for PS1 games.  Remove hardware to cut costs, the software is already there, no reason to remove it.
