So I'm looking at some game splash images, you know the background images that fill the screen when the disc is in the drive and you have the disc selected. Well those images are all 1920x1080 (1080p standard) yet when they are actually shown on the screen the full image is not shown. Only the center of the image is shown.
If the PS3 outputs to 1080p then why don't these 1080p images show the full 1920x1080 size?
Yes I'm running in 1080p on a 1080p hdtv.

I don't understand what you mean. You mean the cut scenes? Like in GTA IV? Or the start up of a game? (ie. Infinity Ward logo, DICE logo, Activision logo, etc.)

So you're saying that the 1920x1080 images are not really 1920x1080 images? You lost me at "yet when they are actually shown on the screen the full image is not shown. Only the center of the image is shown."
No the splash images for the games are 1920x1080 but when you run the PS3 in 1080p the full 1920x1080 resolution is not displayed. The images are cut off not showing the full 1920x1080 size of them. Doing a small bit of estimating from what the images show on screen to what they look like in the actual 1920x1080 images, in the game these images are not shown in true 1080p but instead only show about 1830x1016 or so. If the PS3 does output in 1080p then why aren't these images shown in the full 1920x1080 size and not cut off?

Are you sure your TV isn't overscanning?

Wait. How do you notice if a few pixels are missing from a pic you dont have the original of? very curious.
None the less, this wasnt a bashing comment I just really want to know what you;re talking about. For me tho, I noticed my display was going offscreen with the web browser thing. Not sure if it is a web browser but some websites work (*cough* bashing crappy browser *cough*). How I knew? Well myhome page is google YAY and the menu at the top never showed but I never realised that up until I went to some websites like youtube with piece of the logo missing and one website in particular with a menu at the top I could not reach. I HAD TO turn the size from full to ... well whatever the second smaller size is for me to see it. but then I would see piece of my wallpaper. This solved the page problem but now I could not see the site I was on (at the top) nor what was loading (at the bottom).
Playing around with my monitor solved that prob and I can run the browser thing on max and not miss any details contained in the web page.
In short, if what you suspect is true, maybe some of it is out of range. Play with your thing to solve it. Not that thing, your display (be it a tv a monitor or ... whatever else)

I have a BD drive on my PC, you can see what's on PS3 discs. They all have .png splash images that are 1920x1080. The PS3 definitely isn't showing the full 1920x1080 size of them. Even tried on a monitor set to 1080p and get the same results.

so are you saying that there is a space around the image, like it doesnt reach the edges of your screen.
or are you saying the image goes past the edges of your screen (overscan)
i still cant figure out what your talking about as all images fill my screen perfectly whether in game or "splash" image at the xmb.

Like it is overscanning. See the image below. (shrunk down just for example)
The actual image is 1920x1080 but the PS3 only shows about what is in the white shaded area when running in 1080p.

I wouldnt ne surpised if either:
A) the PS3 does it automatically with the assumption of overscan
or more likely
B) Your HDTV has a slight zoom turned on (most HDTVs have like 2 zoom levels, mostly to remove timecode, etc from broadcast frames).
