My ps3 is suffering from the problem many others have had where it shuts down after being on for a few seconds with a blinking red light. I don't see any yellow light (so i'm not sure why some people refer to it as the ylod), but that's basically the problem. This started for me after having the ps3 off for about a month while we were on vacation- NEVER once had a problem with it before that, so this seems relaly strange. First time turning it on after walking in the door, it powered on for about 3 seconds and shut off.
After trying for a few times I eventually got it to stay on, and then it stayed good for about a week and a half, and now it's back to doing the same thing. Finally tried the psu fix where you turn those two plastic screws counterclockwise a bit, but it doesn't seem to have worked for me.
I'm wondering, if that didn't fix it, is there still a high chance the issue is with the PSU? I'm basically trying to decide if I I want to spend the time/money on tried to find a refurb PSU or something on ebay, or just say f*** it and replace the thing altogether. Replacement psu is not all that expensive, but if there's a low chance it will work I'd rather not throw that money in the toilet and waste my time : / But that said, I'd also like to avoid losing or having to figure out how I can get my save game data etc off the 'dead' ps3.

i have the ps3 that came with metalgear, 80gb i think. the ylod is a more expensive fix than the psu, right? maybe it's better i replace the unit to get o newer model that will run cooler.

i guess that means playing ps2 games on the ps3, and no i don't need that.
i looked at your video of ylod & mine is different in that the flashing red light can be turned into the steady red standby light by hitting the start button again. then i hit the start button, green light then flashing red light.
it started shutting down in the middle of games & watching blurays this week. now, it won't stay on long enough to even remove the game disc.

With a YLOD you can do the same thing, hit the on/off button to switch to a steady red light, then green, flash of yellow, and blinking red light. Whatever you have it is probably something that can't be fixed easily.
In later PS3 models, Sony made is possible to eject a disc if the unit becomes non-functioning...
