Yesterday I was playing Soul Calibur 4, and everything was working fine. It worked fine two days ago as well.
Though yesterday at a certain point, I quit to the main menu of Soul Calibur 4, and there it stayed - a blank black screen.
I waited about a minute or two before I tried to quit the game. When I tried to quit the game and return to the XMB, the screen just stayed black, only now I couldnt load up and XMB anymore.
I waited a bit more before I touched the turn off button (the front one). The PS3 beeped 3 times as usually happens when it gets stuck, and then turned off.
I turned it on and got the SC4 disc out, put it back in, and tried to go back in the game again. the game won't load, maybe sometimes reach the character selection screen then go dead. I should note that the music tends to stop before anything worse happens.
I've head about 2 more cases of people having their PS3s dead while playing SC4, with the same symptoms of music stopping and black screen.
I don't know the firmware versions of the 2 other cases but I imagine it's 2.42, like mine.
I should also note that no games that require a disc to be inserted can be played at all right now, especially MGS4 which doesn't load at all (PS3 logo comes up, goes off, screen stays blank and then goes back to XMB saying there's an error and that the disc is corrupted). PSN games work fine (tried Tekken DR, Super Stardust HD, Pixeljunk Monsters) - only Super Stardust HD works very, very slowly when it comes to loading times.
I would like to ask if anyone else experienced the same malfunctions playing SC4 or any other game that requires you to put in a disc.
I'd hate it if there's no solution to the problem, since having your PS3 replaced here in Israel is like waiting for the messiah, and even then you can really be sure it's been replaced with a new one or a refurbished one.
.... say, we are on the same boat now, PS3 won't read any discs, DVD, CD, BLU-RAY , ANY disc related media.
there's no clear solution at the moment. so i guess the best thing for you is to sit tight, wait for the new firmware update, and see if it can fix the problem. if not, try ebay, buy a blu-ray module for your specific model, and get someone to replace it for you.
i really wish things don't have to come to this, peoples running around garage electronic shops trying to get their system fixed just because the customer service is out of reach or too expensive to reach. especially when the real cause of the disaster is still very blurry.
maybe you should leave it like that until someone figured a clear fix, or the cause.
my case is, i was playing GTA4, which forced me to update the FW in order to play (originally 1.91 or sth which came with the "Lair" game ). was fine for the first evening, then in the next day (today) , all in a sudden, the game (GTA4) gets stuck with all the sound repeating again and again, a soft reboot using the power button just brings up a black screen with the beeps, and no more. then after it finally reboots to the XMB, it won't read any discs anymore. (the small ball like thing on the upper right corner of the screen still rolls, the blue light lits, but the disc drive just won't read any disc.)
then, as you might already read from my original "HELP!" thread, i managed to get a new blu-ray module and replaced the assumingly "dead" one. and it's working fine for the moment. but after reading all those similar threads floating around the forum for the last few hours, i think i'd better put the thing aside for the moment unti the next update shows up with a clear fix or some kind of a announcement regarding the incident (or, say, a disaster, which i paid a fortune for my launch model while i was travelling in japan)
try typing "blu-ray PS3" , "blu-ray lens" or sth like that. be careful tho, i wouldn't buy anyting from guys with just a few feedbacks and living half an Earth away.
don't buy anything until there's a clear fix or the cause of this crap. and don't panic and do sth crazy which kills your blu-ray. maybe it can be fixed by the next software update as your blu-ray seems still not "officially dead" .
if indeed it can be fixed by a FW update, then i'll be a happy man with one backup blu-ray module in my pocket (precious...my preeeciousss) . try look into the bright side. say, i was very busy for the last several months and im a MGS fan, sooo, the truth is, i just brought my copy of GTA4 and MGS4 the other day, which is already 2 months behind my original plan, singing all the way home to enjoy my blockbuster break from job , and now i must force myself to stay away from it. how fun is that. . DUH!
