Nope.

But you need 3 HDDs

The original in the PS3 (check)

The back Up USB HDD storage device. (to back up your current HDD content to)

And the New HDD..

First you backup your current HDD to the USB HDD. You also need the current Firmware File stored on it or another USB device

Then you install the new hdd / and add the firmware update.

You then restore the OLD files from the Back up HDD.

2 HDDs (the original PS3 HDD and the NEW larger HDD) plus a PC and a USB enclosure also works well.  Put the NEW HDD in the enclosure and ensure that it is formatted FAT or FAT32.  WinXP or later won't do this, you'll need 3rd party software, MacOS X will allow you to format a drive FAT32 (Disk Utility calls it MS-DOS, but the PS3 will still recognize it).  Some drives are still shipped formatted FAT32, but many manufacturers have started shipping them formatted NTFS (which will not work with the PS3).

Once you have the NEW HDD in the enclosure and formatted properly, hook it up to the PS3 and run the backup utility (this process will take a while).  Once it finishes, hook the NEW HDD up to your computer and copy it to the desktop, preserving the folder format.  Swap the HDDs, pulling the OLD HDD from the PS3 and replacing it with the NEW HDD.  Put the OLD HDD into the enclosure and format it FAT32 (same method as above will work), copy the PS3 data to it, hook it up to the PS3 and run the restore function from the backup utility (which will also take a while).

Enjoy your newly upgraded PS3.

Re: Upgrading the PS3 HDD

There have been a few reports that moving the back up file from the back up HDD breaks the Backed up DRM'ed content.

Thats stopped Copyrighted Games saves, Movies and TV shows restoring.

So I can't recommend the 2 HDD and PC usage system any more... Also alot of users Still don't have a PC. they seam to avoid the US forum and invade the EU forum.

Likely because this forum does not  work so hot on PS3...

Re: Upgrading the PS3 HDD

Small question... how do I know if I have the slim PS3 or a standard PS3? My hard drive is 80gb (which I heard makes it backwards compatible) and have had it for a while. I read in the links above that state how to upgrade a slim PS3 HDD - if I do not have a slim PS3, how do I upgrade a standard PS3 HDD?

Re: Upgrading the PS3 HAD

Dec 20, 2012

I'm sorry, I had that wrong - I'm not 100% sure about my HDD size, I checked a long time ago, and posted it's size on here - 80gb. I apologize for my mistake.  So I would assume that my console is not a slim, and the help I got a little while ago for upgrading my PS3 was for a "slim" version. How do I upgrade a non-slim PS3? Again, I apologize for my mistake and I appreciate your help.
