Actually, a couple of PS3 games are region-locked. It is rare, but the PS3 supports region-locking for games, and any game that wants to can use it. Even if the disk was for a different region, the PS3 would still recognize the disk. It would display an error message to the effect that the content was not playable on that PS3. If it doesn't recognize the disk at all, then there is an issue with the disk, or your Blu-ray drive. Probably the drive. It has nothing to do with the region. Many games only support online multi-player within a region, so if you are still using your UK PSN account, you may not be able to play against someone that is using a US or Canadian PSN account.
