Hey guys,
So I've been wrestling with the red screen issue and haven't had any luck so far.
The main recommendation for this problem (as I've seen all over the internet) is to stick in a flash drive with the latest firmware and update your PS3 manually. I've tried this several times, and while it always acknowledges that it finds the updated software and begins to load it, it gets to 40% on the download and then stops, restarts, and brings me to the red screen again. =(
I'm wondering, has anyone else experienced this specific problem, and if so, what did you do to circumvent the issue? I really don't want to send my PS3 in for service, because I know it'll cost a lot of money and I also know they'll wipe my HD when I send it in. I've got a lot of memories on my PS3, most importantly my LBP levels, which I worked on a lot with my brother and which are pretty sentimental to me. =( I'd really rather not obliterate those, so if it's at all possible, I'd LOVE to fix this myself, or at least pull the saved data from my HD in such a way that I could eventually access it again when the PS3's working.
Any ideas? Anyone familiar with this specific brand of problem that could offer some advice, or does anybody know how I can at the very least salvage my saves before I send my baby off for service? Q_Q

I would suggest you pick up a PS3 Fix guide if you want to fix this yourself. Not only will it show you how to fix this with step by step directions it also has video of what to do and they offer 24 hour support if you hit a speed bump along the way.
It is the first link in my signature if you want to check it out further.
