Sorry, I'll try again.

Nopers.
It's for future updates so we can see PSN level, trophy count, etc in the negative space of the gray area.
If they wanted you to read White text on bright backgrounds Sony would have been smart enough to add a DROP SHADOW to increase the contrast between the lettering and background.
Then they would ONLY show the gray bar on friends that you have selected/hovering over - that's the logical solution without cluttering an entire screen with gray bars... then again... this firmware is anything BUT logical.

You've never seen a bright BG before? O.o
Trust me - Afrika is not the first to have a bright BG where you couldn't read the text on the XMB.

They could be working on getting rid of needing to go to that extra screen to view the whole card. Implementing the "Drop Box" feature should
further streamline the XMB and hopefully save some system resources. Now with the Premium avatars, they're gonna be just like how Home content
is either premium or free. One feature I would like to see is the ability to have Profile Card themes. The theme would also look the same on the friends list.
That's pretty much what he said. You said themes for the cards while he was saying premium avatars. (the avatars would cover up the gray box)
No, premium (or free) avatars won't cover the box. That should be the job of profile card themes.
You see how you have the EU Gamer card? The theme of it is Infamous (altough you should be able to change
the color too).

I don't want to see big ugly grey bars - if they even want us to see more info about our friends (like who cares - if you care, you should view their profile), then I want to see a gamercard similar to Zaanos's sig. that is well designed and nice to look at. grey boxes are brutal and do not suit the overall look and feel of the PS3's sleek and minimalist design. they had it right before, and are now trashing what was a very well designed interface.
