The "Firmware Bricking" Project. (looking for a possible fix)

Ok... I'm taking my 'fat' PS3 and I'm going to experiment on it to try & find out if there is a fix for games freezing & etc.

Right now, I am formatting several drives to install in my old PS3... a 40gb, the original 80gb, and the 500gb that was in the system when the drive took a vacation.

I'm following the steps that one would take as if they were upgrading their PS3, uncluding having the most recent update on a USB drive to install a fresh version of the firmware.

As I progress through my experiment, I will post any findings on this thread. Systems are young & firmwares are firm... there HAS to be a simple glitch causing the drive to work sometimes, AND not other times.

More to come soon.

you should probably refrain from using the term "brick".
if you are able to power on and/or access the XMB, it hasn't bricked.

Attempt 1... 40gb drive...

Successful Blu Ray reading on disc... quickly loading, attempting with Fallout 3 (a load heavy game that uses up a fair amout of drive space) has not locked up yet.

Be back later...

So far, so good... no symptoms of a struggling drive... no frame drops, load times are quick.

Re: The "Firmware Bricking" Project. (looking for a possible fix)

I had the '15 min freeze' situation... plays for 10 to 15 & the system just has a stroke, PS button doesn't respond. reboot the system & the drive won't read anything, a couple hours later you can play for another 10 to 15 mins.

Tonight, after a full system restore, removal of HDD, PC format with fat32format.exe of the HDD, re-installation of HDD into system, re-restore of system with PS3 format of the HDD including fresh firmware from USB stick... it's still going strong.

I think it's been about 30 mins, I'll give it 15 more minutes & try a Blu Ray. So far, so good.

More later...

well, that is certainly wonderful news.  should it be proven successful (after a thorough test), this will hopefully make a lot of people happy.
