As mentioned before, Im sure nobody turns on their PS3 to watch the XMB. You'll probably only see it for a few seconds at best. "But it repeats the same information!!!!" I cant see how thats annoying either. With all the reading people do on a daily basis, most of the time without thinking about it, it becomes rather ludicrous to say that reading "on sale now" more than once a day is burden.
I personally love the whats new section, and the ticker never bothers me. I've never even read it. Doesnt do anything negative, so whats the problem. It's not like your games run slower, your movies stutter, or big advertisement squares are all over the screen. Plus, if this miniscule amount of advertising keeps my PSN free, then by all means keep it going.
As for tv size, I have a 50 and 32 inch. Ticker isnt bothersome on either. As a side note, my 50" DLP tv cost a total of $800 brand new. If you can afford a PS3, you can afford an hdtv.
its ok if you like the news. It just should be optional. manditory news is propaganda. Hmmm, what kind of countries use propaganda?
I cant believe you just said that............you know what, yes I can. With all the illogical negativity ridiculous attempts to logically explain why these features are detrimental to gaming as we know it, it was only a matter of time.
Lets start by answering you question. What country? Every country, especially America. Look at the world wars if you need convincing.
Second, you obviously dont understand what propaganda is. News is information on past/current/future events. For example, "Scientist have discovered a new species," is news. "Flower is on sale for $0.99" is news. It lets you know something that you may not have know.
Propaganda is information meant to INFLUENCE the way you think about something. Example, "Not voting is like voting for communism," is propaganda. "Youre not a real gamer if you dont own Flower. Buy it now." is propaganda.
Next time, make sure you have a proper understanding of your argument before you use it.

"Girlz play too" is propaganda, isn't it? I mean, you know they don't actually play video games.

Voice of America is one of the US's current and ongoing propaganda efforts. VoA is prevented by law from broadcasting to American citizens... I remember there was a bit of a stink when news.google.com started aggregating articles from the VoA website.

what you do is change your date and time settings to the future, like changing the year from 2009 to 2010, then restart your ps3 and feast your eyes on a tickerless XMB

Sweet, I'll have to give it a try as when I look around for a solution all I found was an option to turn the ticker off (inside system) but it doesn't work... (or it doesn't correspond to the what's new ticker.)

remember, not every ps3 user is a child who uses their ps3 for the childish playstation network
