The previous replies forget to warn you that PS3 hard drives must be 5400 RPM hub speed or slower or the PS3 with have incompatibility issues.
Other points to note:
If any files at all have any corruption, backup will always fail and cancel with assorted "(800xxxxxx) error codes" when it reaches those files.
The HD is a 2.5 SATA laptop HD with 5400RPM max.
Solid State hard drives are incompatible (do not match the 5400RPM speed required).
Simply installing a new hard drive will not allow the system to boot up to begin restoring the system (I came here just now, looking for solutions to figure out how to do that myself).
System may need to be restored via USB installation of system files, wether or not the backup procedure works.

The PS3 will work with ALL speeds of HDDs, though it will see no benefit to faster (7200-1000RPM) drives. SSDs do, in fact, work in the PS3, and will actually run cooler than conventional HDDs (since there are no moving parts).

Not my fault that Austin TX was 100+ degree's all the time during the summer and my A/c always busted.. Now I'm in IL, and no heat worries hear right now
