Repairing AAC files that won't play with 2.70 firmware

7 replies 92 views Edited Apr 3, 2009

Hi everyone,

Okay - after I updated to Firmware 2.70, some of the AAC files in my PS3's music library stopped working.   The error message I got was "The data type is not supported"

The odd thing is that other AAC files still worked.  Also - all of the MP3s, ATRACs, etc. worked fine - just AAC.

Now - I had created all of these files on my PS3 from my own CDs using the same bitrates and settings.   So - why some worked and some didn't puzzled me.

I decided to play around with them a little bit.  I found that if I copied them straight to my PSP - they worked.  Then, I copied the files back to my PS3.  Surprisingly, they now worked.

So - I came up with a simple "repair" procedure.  This is how I'm doing it - feel free to experiment and see what works for you.

Steps:

1.  Connect a PSP to your PS3

2.  Navigate to the "broken" AAC files on your PS3 and copy them to your PSP.  I do this album folder by album folder.

3.  Delete the album folder from your PS3.

4.  Copy the album folder from your PSP back to your PS3.

5.  (optional) Delete the album folder from your PSP.

This has worked for me.  My guess is that AAC files that were created with the earliest versions of PS3 firmware are missing some metadata/ID tag that the new level match feature requires.  By copying the files up to the PSP and back, it cleans up the metadata and other information associated with each of the files.

I'm going to experiment some more with this - but I'm documenting what I've found right now.

Cheers,

Paul

So, essentially, those of us without a PSP are "screwed"? =P

I'm running out of test files - so I'm going to stop experimenting in case somebody from Sony needs more information - but it worked when I copied it to a memory stick as well.  The PSP is just the first way I tried it.

That's a regular Sony Memory Stick Pro DUO with the 60 gig built-in card reader.  (i.e. the memory card from my PSP)

Hope that helps!

Oh yeah - you might have to re-edit some of your file Information.  Sometimes it makes it through untouched - and sometimes it's slightly garbled.

Cheers,

Paul

Good stuff. That was a bit quicker than ripping all the CD's again.
