Well i wouldnt say that a firmware update is the cause of most ps3's to die, but more of a indicater of telling you there is a problem.
For example, i have a 1000 series psp, i had it since launch. The psp has been very good up untill a year or so ago, in the last year the psp would have a tuff time reading umd's especially in the wintertime when the house is cold but it would run as normal in the summer time. Well it is basicly the oil used for the motor and to move the laser back and forth is getting old, as in the oil after a bit of time is hardening wich is ether slowing down the motor or the laser wich tends to cause the umds to not be properly read. Now do i say its the firmware causing the problem or is it the hardware. In this case its the hardware.
Now for the ps3, the same can be applied but in the case of a bluray drive not reading disc's after a update could be that the speed change in the drive could not be handeled by the motor, or power changes to the laser could of caused a problem and the drive cant handle it. See the firmware is most likely not the problem of killing the hardware, but more like the tipping moment of showing you that your having hardware problems. This is why many ppl dont have a problem with the updates and only some ppl do. If the hardware is working properly, then you wont have a problem, if the hardware is faulty, then the firmware update helps point this out.
As for the current update with the HDD instalation, sony fixed the problem as long as you kept your original HDD for the updated fix.

Disc drive inoperable post 3.56.1/3.56.2 Firmware update. Called Playstation support and was informed by a representative that the firmware update is not the cause for the disk read failure, but rather the problem was the system is having problems reading the disk.
I must be lead to believe that customer support is doing their job. After all, I was supported with, "Yes you have a problem". What support, now I am assured I am not crazy and something is wrong. Right?
But wait, This happened for the very first time in the lifetime of my system immediately after installing the new 3.56 Firmware, wouldn't that lead me to also believe that it has something to do with the Firmware? No, I was told after describing my issue that it's not necessarily the update but something internally may be going on with the Playstation itself.
I am told that I would have to send it in for service, it would be for a service fee of 129.99 + taxes, including shipping to and from.
This is my exact response as recorded from the representative regarding the correlation of disk read failure and the Firmware update:I've actually been hearing that as well (um) and then it happened to mine too, it does it with every update. It will temporarily, not necessarily disable it, but it could just throw it off for a second and then by itself... it kinda corrects itself.(?) (um) But it's not necessarily the update itself... So if it was something to do with the update it would have not just been your console, it would have been many others and we would have come up with another update to try and see if we could correct the issue, but we haven't heard too much about that.
There are obvously many people with this problem as you look on the forums, even here on Playstation's site where they have control over the site and it's contents.
What I find unacceptable here is how the real problem here is being completely disregarded and left as a complete internal failure and Sony being left completely out of any fault. For thousands of people, they will be stuck forking out over $100 dollars to repair their system because of updating "trusted, secure" Firmware directly from Sony unless something is done about this.

since the last update i have 2 bricked ps3 and my cousin has one. It sounds like Sony is up to the same thing they was up to back when the 3.0 come out where law suits was filed. 3.20 had very serious issues not to mention the 2.40 Sony and its customer service has not only ignored my cousin but has blocked his email from reaching them.
