yup sony won't admit they screwed up lets just keep making this into a big thread and maybe we will get sony's attention. But if they don't do anything Im possibly selling my ps3 and taking my business to xbox (microsoft)
My 80 gig PS3 (Release CECHE01) - it is 1.5yrs old. I had never had a problem until last weekend. After 'updating' to ver. 3.00 my disc drive stopped reading discs altogether.
I've called Sony Tech support and he suggested that my disc drive is now broken, I am all but sure he is correct. He also suggested that the two events were related; stating that the firmware update cleared my cahche memory, which had been allowing my drive to read 'lazily'- after the upgrade the 'underlying defect' was brought to the surface because the drive could no longer read 'lazily' due to the cleared cache. He said that my drive was going to eventually break regardless of the upgrade. THe tech I spoke to felt that this cleared SCEA from any liabilty because the firmware update did nothing but hasten an imminent event.
I understand this point of view, and I disagree with it. Everything will eventually break, because of entropy every atom in the universe will eventually be returned to a state of uniformity, everyone will eventually die. This does not mean that a murderer has done nothing wrong simply because they have merely hastened an imminent event (death). Even so, even if my PS3 would have only lasted another week, another 2 hours, another day, according to this tech this time has been taken from me by the firmware update.
He also stated that, in his expereince, the same thing happens to a small number of machines each time a firmware upgrade is released. When I asked why Sony does not inform its customers that the update could harm thier machine he said it happened to only a small number of machines so it was not of much concern to them.
Either way, the tech all but confirmed the idea that the firmware update caused (or hastened in his words) my drive to stop working.
I have contacted SCEA in writing regarding this information and am waiting for a reply.
