Okay, I won't tell you to buy a PS2. Instead, I'll tell you to buy a used 60GB PS3. Seriously. I purchased one from eBay last year and I love it. I think we can forget about b/c on the non-b/c PS3s.

From doing some reading on the net backwards compatability with PS2 games required at least a Graphics Synthesizer (GS) chip for software emulation or a Graphics Synthesizer (GS) chip and Emotion Engine (EE) chip for hardware emulation.

So firmware updates will not add backwards compatability with the PS2, since PS2 compatability is dependent on those chips (or at least one of them)..

With the exception of a few earlier models those chips are not included in the PS3's anymore, so it's a pretty safe conclusion that you will have to do what you don't want us to tell you (or pick up a b/c compatable PS3 like The_Iron_Goat suggested)

as it's been rumoured since october 2009, PS2 games will be coming to the PSN store.  so that is really the only way BC is coming back to the PS3 (i.e. to those units that never had it to begin with).

It would be nice if they did that, but a rumor is a rumor and I was never one for giving to much stock in PS3 rumors...

Even if PS2 games came to the PS Store, the PS3 couldn't play it anyways. It still needs those chips. They'd have to re-do every PS2 game in order for it to work, and that would cost too much money.

No, *you're* wrong. The 80gb B/C model still had the GS chip in it.

Yeah. Sony did not REMOVE B/C from the older PS3's. They DID NOT INCLUDE IT AT ALL in the newer ones. But they did not take those that already had it away.

If it doesn't work, then the chip inside your B/C PS3 has broke somehow. Making your 80 GB like a downsized slim (that is fat).

So yeah. This is not something they removed, they just no longer include it.

The 80GB ps3 is from the second generation run. The first and second generations had full PS2 bc.

Those chips aren't required for bc. GOW I/II were PS2 games. They were reformatted onto blue ray. They work on the PS3. For PS2 games to be on the store, they just need to change a few 0's and 1's.

3P is a port of a PS2 game for the PSP with only a few differences!  Surely a PSP doesn't have those chips.

DVD based PS2 bc probably won't happen but PSN PS2 games might
