I found a fix that may work for some of you:
If you're getting "an error has occurred" right after you enter your password @ checkout, then go into your account management and disable the option that requires a password during checkout.

Yeah, I even tried the online PC PlayStation store and I still get the same lousy message that actually doesn't say that much.
I guess somebody at Sony will notice a major drop in sales and consult their forum... If you're that guy and you're reading this, please feel our pain.

Yup, "An error has occurred" and that error is Sony losing yet another customer. All I wanted was a simple $3 DLC that took me half an hour to find and now you've lost a loyal Playstation owner since it's inception PS1 for life. Multiple those lost earnings by all of my buddies experiencing the same problems and our purchases of XBox 360s and voila, Sony you've just shown the world how to boost a competitors sales while **bleep**ting on your own. Great business model Sony, keep it up so I can see you end up like Sega and soon Nintendo. Anyone want to buy a PS3? If yes, just ADD FUNDS to MY WALLET.....I don't give error codes! Going to pick up an XBox 360 tmmrw and trade in all of my games for 360 versions.

Having the same issue myself. I've been trying to renew (repurchase) my PS Plus subscription for a week now, and keep getting the same "an error has occurred" every time I try to add funds or purchase. It doesn't look like it's getting fixed anytime soon...

I found out that what was causing the error for me was that my credit card information has changed or expired.
