Not here. Sony just guaranteed that this will probably be the last Sony product I buy.
I've had enough. With the limits they've imposed this is anything else but "optional". I take great offense at their intrusion and removal of capability.
This is the latest in a long line of screw ups where Sony have shown a complete disregard for their customers...the shoddy introduction of the PSP, the ridiculous PSP Pro (was that what it was called?), the store, the proprietary formats... the list goes on.
Sony have proven themselves not to be particularly trustworthy. I am done with them, their business practices and their crappy over priced products.

They warn you about what happens if you download this update and install it. And from the looks of it there was a hacker that did something to ruin it for the rest of the world. And until that problem can be fixed they pulled the plug on the other OS. What they are doing is not illegal or unfair cause everything that has anything to do with PSN or going online with the PS3 falls under their TOS that you agree to, if you don't agree to what they say, you can't use it and it is that simply. They say you can't go online with the other OS feature running then you won't be going online.

I am glad Sony is doing it because i really dont want to see the ps3 end up like the psp. Sony already has a big problem dealing with hacked psp's we really dont want the ps3 with rampent hacker problems.
And in what way will this stop this? You think the hackers are going to just update their PS3? No, they’re going to just create a way to get around this update. The only thing this update does is screw over legitimate users who are using this feature how it is meant to be used.
and if you look at the hacks ther all for fw 2,4? so this will not stop them at all and sony just forced them to make a ps3 cfw to get back the other os option and it will end up being just like the psp i give it 6 months befor the first ps3 cfw

To the original poster. No one unlocked the Nvidia RSX. The only one who has come close to my knowledge is Geohot, and that is primarily with the memory. Whether he unlocks it or not you still have one big problem, it's called a driver. And second, no one played Crysis on their ps3. They would have to use a program called WINE, which in otherwords won't work for the ps3 because it uses x86 not CELL. You would then have to rely on QEMU which emulates windows which is possible through linux on the ps3. But it is incredibly slow, particularly if you wish to use Win XP.
Please, I am as upset as you are over all of this, but don't spread misinformation around.

I don't care one way or the other that they removed the otherOS option. I for one never installed linux on my system as I already have two computers. One that runs windows 7 and one that runs ubuntu. I use my computers for my computer related areas and only have two games on my windows based computer. If i want to play games that is when i turn my ps3 on so i never considered a need to install an OS on there since I see no advantage of having it on there. Everyone is entitled to how they feel about it but reading the subjects covering this its just becoming two opposing sides screaming their views as loud as they can and degrading those who oppose their view.
Hackers are always going to find ways to break through systems but if sony sees this as closing the easiest entrance for them and forcing them to brick several consoles testing out new theories of how to get around stuff. Bricking may be another reason they are removing the option as (even though I did not try to install it myself) I have heard that an error in trying to install the linux kernal could cause a system failure and the system would need to be repaired or replaced. So in all yes sony is closing the door on a lot of people who bought the console wanting the ability to run linux, but overall its potential solution to people breaking their systems trying to install linux. If you want to get rid of your ps3 cause it doesnt run linux anymore, then by all means do so, but flaming the boards with posts calling those that dont want to do the same sheep under the control of some evil company that wants to control our every thought is going to get rediculous really fast.

"Well I certainly don't use it! As we all know, my opinion is more important than absolutely anyone else's opinion here. Who cares if other people use it for a legitimate reason, it doesn't affect me now, so Sony could cause everyone else's PS3s to burst into flames so as long as it doesn't happen to mine."
This is the #1 problem with our youth today! We are raising a ME,ME,ME generation that cares nothing for their neighbor, brother or any one else in existence on this planet. As long as I am happy the rest of the world can burn is the motto of todays youth and it is a sad state of affairs to say the least.
Shame on you parents who spoil rotten your childrenand have them believe that they are something incredibly more special and deserving than the rest of the human population. I am disgusted and frightened when I think of what this world will be when these ungrateful, self-centered, monsters run the world in a few short years.

Ok, I bought a PS3 - 60 GB that can play all three versions of games and have had the system for a few years now. I bought a PS3 with the option to install Linux on it anytime I choose. Regardless, whether you agree or disagree with each other, you cannot remove a feature that was originally used as selling point. It would be like Mircosoft saying "Because of security reasons, if you don't upgrade to Windows 7, we're removing your internet access and the ability to play newer games. You still have the option not to update though." See, I live in the South and in a rural area and many PS3 users here don't even have internet access. So if they were to buy a brand new game that requires the 3.21 Update, they are totally out of luck. With game consoles, you are suppose to be able to pop in a game and start playing. Not update and then play and then update again. Today, I will be one of the people who does file with FTC. So don't start bashing the ones complaining about this. Just remember, if people didn't complain about the way the selling of meat was handled in the early 1900's, then you could probably eating an actual dog in your hot dog. We are just looking out for your rights regardless if you choose to pursue them.

dude u guyz might be rich to buy lotat games for high prices!!! but if the ps3 was hacked lots more ppl wiuld buy it! i know at least more than 20 ppl that bought Xbox 360 just because of this reason! and what about people like me who like to use linux on ps3! sony shoudnt have advertized it in the first place if they were afraid it would sooner or later lead to hacking! i mean im usre sony has some hardware and software experets to tell em that :@

well its people like you that are part of the reason the otherOS is being removed since you are waiting for the system to be hacked so you can just download the pirated versions of the game. And to claim you arent rich you dont need to buy every single game that is released either. I have had the ps3 since it came out and never owned more than 4 games most of which are preowned/budget titles. Games are not a necessity and having the money or not doesnt give you the right to complain that the company slows down your ability to aquire illegal copies of their software.

They are just blind and EXTREMELY BIASED, and of course, IGNORANT. They defend any and every move Sony makes to change things even if it's for the worse, they did this for the website/forums, they did this for Backwards Compatibility, and many other instances of idiocy. They seem willing to bend over and take up their behind for Sony.
