PS3's ship with a gigabit card, so.....in theory, if you're wired (which I am) gigabit speed should be supported.

No, not necessarily.  Just like your online speeds are limited by the speed of your ISP the throughput of the Ethernet port is limited by the speed with which the PS3 can process the data.  One of Nintendo's older gaming systems Ethernet equipped for example had a 100Mbps port which was connected to a 24Mbps system bus.

I can't comment on the older Nintendo systems.  Looking at the system config for the PS3, I should be getting well beyond the 6-8Mbps down I'm getting, period.  Furthermore, with the research I've done on this topic, there are quite a few people who are getting much better speed.  So...

There may be other causes in your case but I do think the issue is most likely with the PS3 itself.  When making changes to your setup for experimentation purposes did you try usind different Ethernet cables to connect the PS3 to the modem/router?

Amongst the 10 million other "Tests", I unplugged my ethernet cord from my PS3, plugged it into my laptop, and ran a speed test at speedtest.net - 52.0 Mbps down.  This is definitely a PS3/PS3 network issue.

Re: Horribly slow ps3 speeds, wired connection

Apr 12, 2010

I have exactly the same problem and trying to play online gives terrible lag.  I can place my Dell laptop on one side of my PS3 and my Sony Vaio Laptop on the other side.  All 3 units are connected by wireless to my Linksys GS router.  Using any browser (IE, CHROME, FIREFOX), and going to www.speedtest.net,  the laptops get a download speed of 15 - 16 Mbps and an upload speed of 1.7Mbps.  Using the same browsers, my PS3 struggles to get 1 or 2Mbps down, but will achieve 1.5Mbps upload speeds.  Usually it gets about 970 Kbps download.    Using a Cat5e connected to the router, the 2 laptops will continue to get similar fast download speeds, but the PS3 will now get about 3 Mbps.  Some days it'll actually get to 4Mbps or slightly above...But it has NEVER hit 5Mbps.  I've tried wiring the PS3 directly to my modem and the speed doesn't improve.

What I have come to realize is that:

  1. It's not a fault of my ISP
  2. It's not a fault of my modem.
  3. It's not a fault of my router.
  4. It's not an issue of the PS3 location (I have tried it within a couple of feet of the router).
  5. It's not a fault of the ethernet cable.
  6. It's not a port forwarding issue either.
The ONLY other variable is the PS3.  Since I bought this unit a little over a year ago, I tried to get help from tech support and they're alway quick to put the blame everywhere else, but have never admitted the PS3 has a serious inherent defect.  I was initially torn between buying this or an Xbox 360...I got the PS3.   Ahhhh...hindsight is always 20/20 isn't it!
SONY...Wake up and fix this problem!!!!

I would suggest going through a proxy server like Privoxy. If you google ps3 and privoxy there is a forum that walks you through it.  Funny thing though. Even though you see 2MB up and down thru the PS3 internet test, speedtest.net will show a total different and higher upload and download speed....

I am having the same problems.

I am connected directly to my router and getting around 8 or 9 Mbps

when I connect the same wire to my laptop I run at about 36Mbps....

I know the playstation is capable of more because the friends that I play with all have faster connection speeds than me.

Please SOMEONE HELP!!!!!!

Re: Horribly slow ps3 speeds, wired connection

let me list why this can only be an issue with the PS3…
1. I had an internet tech come YESTERDAY to test my speeds outside the house and they were great.
2. we disconnected ALL other phone lines in the house dedicating only one line to the modem.
3. Hard wired from the modem to my computer I get aprox 36Mbps of download speed and 4.5 up.
4. Using the same cat5 wire (and tested with a different cat5) i am only getting about 8 or 9 Mbps…..

**bleep**??!!?!?!

I've been on the phone with 3 "Playstation Specialists" today and they all ran me through the same simple steps that have done NOTHING to speed me up

Last words said to me by a "Playstation Specialist", "it must be your modem, it probably doesnt work well with the playstation."
WOW…. words of encouragement
