So my PS3 40G has the YLOD for the second time!!! My 2 year protection plan from Wal-Mart has expired so I contacted Sony to have my system serviced....well Sony tells me that because it was serviced by Walmart there is nothing they can do for me!! Well rather than have someone "fix" my issue I'm just gonna go buy one of the new systems cause my system has been nothing but trouble! Bought it in 2008 and I have been able to play it for maybe a year and a half!!!!! Problem is I upgraded my harddrive to a 500GB and need to get my data transferred to my new system and I have no idea how to do that!!! Please help!!!!

I'm sorry but unless you can get your PS3 started up for long enough to be able to transfer the data across then unfortunately there's nothing you can do.

You should probably explain why instead of "Sorry bro you're S.O.L.."
When you install a hard drive the PS3 has to format the drive to be used for the system. The drive is formated to Fat-16, I believe instead of NTFS. When the format is completed the drive is then coded for that specific console alone. It will not work on any other console unless you reformat it with the new PS3. Had the same thing happen to me a few years back, YLOD with a 60gb launch that I upgraded to 160gb. Took out my drive and replaced it with the original, sent it off for repair and they send me a refurb. Put my 160 in and it doesn't work. Sooo many gamesaves gone........
Sorry bro, you're S.O.L.

Despite the OP's question remaining marked as "Unanswered" it has in fact been answered, correctly.
You didn't like the answer I gave, I answered the OP's question, there was no need to go into the in's & out's of everything when it could be explained simply the way I did, the information you have provided above, although "very interesting' has gained nothing & not furthered the situation for the OP.
The OP maybe S.O.L., Whatever that means!
