What I'm really confused by, is when 3.01 was still the newest kid on the block, when I did a system restore I could play movies and games again for a few hours, then it went back to not reading anything. Why is that? Also you can't say it 100% wasn't the firmware just as much as we can't say it was 100% the firmware.

Maybe your BD drive is starting to fail?  You know like when any electronic device is starting to fail it will sometimes work and sometimes not.

Mikhol with my system I've always been able to still play DVD's, PS2 games and CDs but not PS3 or BD movies.

Sure, it's dead. just a coincidence it happened a few minutes after updating, just like everyone else having problems.

Back to normal, this is a real question that I don't know the answer to. Why does restoring the PS3 system back to factory settings make the bluray start working again?
