It is still there, you can search for it. I also believe I saw it under the Apps section...

In the US store it is searchable (I searched PS2), and is listed in the Apps section.

Which PS3 model do you have? If you live in Europe only the CECHB 60GB model can play PS2 games and use the PS2 system data. If you have a 80GB European model, it won't be able to use the PS2 system data anyway.

The function of the PS2 system data is to allow PS3s that can already run PS2 games to play PS2 games that can be installed on a hard drive, like Final Fantasy 11. It does not make any other PS3 model able to play PS2 games...

Just wondering what is the reason for allowing just one system and a few games to run on ps3 from ps2 games, and not be able to run them all?

Thanks

Running PS2 games unmodified was only possible because the launch year PS3s included the graphics processor chip from the PS2, and in most cases the CPU chip from the PS2 also.  That made the PS3 significantly more expensive to manufacture than the second generation modes were.  PS2 backward compatibility was only intended to provide new Playstation owners (who may have purchased the console as a Blu-ray player, more than anything else), with more games to play.  There weren't many games available for the PS3 at launch, and most of them were not very good compared to the games being released for the PS2 at the time. After the first year, more and better games were released for the PS3, and Sony removed the PS2 hardware, and a few other features, from the PS3 so that the price could be reduced by a third.  This was crucial in driving sales of the console.
