Well, I thought I may of lucked out today.  I went to update and the usual screen comes up (the one right before the error usually appears), but this time it proceeds to the install progress bar.  It progresses a little, but then the system gives me an error saying the install operation was canceled...  so it says power off, remove AC power source for a few minutes and then retry.  Well, once the power is turned on it directly goes to the install progress bar, but never gets past 0% and quickly displays the same error saying to reboo.t.  It also says if it doesnt work, write down the 8002f165 error code and contact service.  

I'm writing a nastygram to Sony as this is my 2nd PS3 to screw up on FW updates.  Let me know if any of you have a solution for my problem.

I wouldn't throw out your current ps3 because of this FW update, im sure someone or something will help us to fix our problems

Well, Sony's only response was to send it to them and pay them.  I don't think I'll be doing this as I'm sure it will happen again soon after.  I'll just keep trying to update and get past the infinite loop.

There's always a way.
I've been trying to find ways to downgrading my PS3 to figure out if my PS3 can't update and it's the systems fault rather than the FW. But I've been having troubles actually finding a legit way of doing it

Sorry for the double post but, I found a interesting problem while swaping hard drives

So as i swapped, and turn my ps3 on it prompted me to update my ps3 via storage media with version 4.10 and up. So naturally i downloaded a fresh copy of 4.21 . Surprisingly i got the same Error 8002f165 with a HD that has no history of getting it in the first place.

I was then stuck at the screen were it prompted me to update my HD. But whenever i put back my old HD in, i would get the error but i get sent back to ps3 interface.

Anyone has some ideas?

Did you reformat your original HD? I'm now thinking of doing that but thought I read on other posts not to do that. Have you verified the 4.21 download?

Ya i did reformat the original hd via my pc, and i have to agree with the other posts you've read. DON'T DO IT.

You'll be forever stuck with the screen which prompts you to update your ps3 only to get the same error over and over again.

I can't even update my ps3 using older versions!

This REALLY **bleep** sucks and its REALLY pissing me off considering I just pre-ordered Persona 4: Arena and now I can never get this fixed

Please help me, someone! FFS

I'm starting to lose my sanity, I'm literally starting to lose my sanity. I searched through all of Google (currently on page 7) and im getting the same responses.

I tried swapping hd's so many times that my spare hd magically stopped working on me

I'm starting to doubt what I said earlier
