Can I replace a PS3's hard drive with one not backed up?

I had a "Fat" PS3 with a 20GB hard drive that I replaced with a 500GB drive. That system broke and I now have a new (refurbished) "Fat" system with a 20GB drive. Since the old system is broken, I cannot back up my data on the 500GB drive, so when I put it in the new system it says it needs to be formatted. Is there any way that I can use my data on the new system?

Only if you can get the old one running long enough to do a back up or transfer. If that's not possible then "No"
