Discovered an aggrivating problem with my 60 gig BC PS3 tonight. Despite that it plays games just fine, I tried a few in fact just tonight. I've been getting an error 800299B8 with the needlessly cryptic message "An error has occured."
tried several movies blu ray and dvd same error every time. Since I been playing more movies than games recently it is overly annoying. Even the last movie I played successfully played gave the same error tonight. And I do take good care of my system, ventilated and very much dust free environment. Luckily the place that does the warranty repairs for sony is in driving distance but the cost is still prohibitive if avoidable.

Allow me to explain. One day you'll see that *everything* will, at one time or another, indicate that an error has occurred. The indication is just an indication. It need not lead to despair.
The most serious error would be the error that actually stops you from doing anything at all with your machine. I mean if you wanted no errors at all you'd be in a clean room environment. So no one has a clean room environment at home, right? Well, I'm sure that's probably being worked on, but then - how close are we to getting there? What we do is make the effort to approach the ideal, which sounds easy until you realize that it takes regular backups, hardware maintenance and so on.
What I use is PlayStation Plus, which helps me to back up all my games saves once a day, every day. How does it work, you say? It's network based, so what it does is it reaches out over the network, sends data to servers, and downloads data (such as available updates) from servers. It does this at the time of your choosing, for almost all people the best time is going to be at night.
And when you boot up your machine, it will immediately notify you of the current update status of your PS3. You'll have a much better experience and it's certainly less intimidating than having to back up manually. The only settings you need to worry about are the actual update time, and which games to enable for network backup. I back up all my games. However, one might see a few lemons that don't need to be backed up.
This is just about the backup routine, but there is more going on than just backing up game saves. I'm of course assuming here that game saves are a priority. And, I'm not trying to make it sound like a huge problem or something all blown out of proportion. This is resolvable and you *can* have a normal gaming life.

That error code is not listed in the knowledge base. The first thing that you need to do is to find out what it means. You will have to e-mail Playstation customer support using the PS3 / Error codes topic at http://support.us.playstation.com/app/ask.
I wouldn't bother calling on the phone. The call center representatives won't know what the error code means either, and will probably tell you to restore your PS3, which would be premature.
