I had the same sporadic problem (error 80029940) with the netflix CD on my old style ps3, and I tried EVERTHING I read on this and other forums to try and fix it....
Change date and time by internet - nope
Delete BD folder - nope
Reset PS3 to default settings - nope
Flip netflix cd upside down and then try again - nope
Hit triangle button and then select play - nope
Hard reset system (button in back) - nope
Change "whitescreen" setting - nope
I then cleaned the dvd off with water and a paper towel - it looked good, some very MINOR cosmetic scratches. When I inserted it into the PS3 - same thing, black screen and message error 80029940. When I ejected it, I saw a straight line of dust/dirt/debris on the CD from one end of the disc to the other. Then I took an alcohol wipe, wiped it down (leaving it WET) and re-inserted it in the PS3 and viola - IT WORKED!!!!
I had one of those PDI alcohol wipes, but I imagine a clean cloth and some rubbing alcohol would work, trick is to leave it wet. These blue ray discs and the PS3 blue ray player seems very sensitive. I'd imagine a comination of internal dust on the laser/ inside the unit itself mixed with some cosmetic surface scratches is the culprit here. Trying a CD/DVD lens cleaner/sweeper in the PS3 might work also. Mine is about 21/2 years old and probably has some dust inside that is affecting the Blue Ray play, becasue of sensitivity issues. Hopefully this works for you guys too. Take care.
I Just bought a PS3, not even last week and am receiving this error message. Granted it was from Amazon and an older 60G for the backwards compatibility but it should still be able to play bluray, or so we thought. We went out and bought several movies and none of them seem to work. They are brand new straight from the case to the player and none of this seems to be working. Is this just the penalty for getting an older PS3? I just don't know whether to send it back or not. Haven't had a problem with any other disks, just bluray.
I odn't mean to sound like a brat but even when our xbox got the red ring Microsoft paid for shipping and immediatly fixed the problem. I'm really disapointed that after this long Sony has done nothing to look for a solution.
Wow... I'm getting this error too... I have transformers 2... and this error just suddenly came up... All my other BD's works perfect besides this one... There were fingerprints on it... wiped it off and so far it works...
I got this error during the last 20 mins of a movie I own. The screen froze and the I got the error message. I checked the disk and it is clear of finger prints, cracks or any other blemishes. I put in a different Blu-ray and it worked fine all the way through. Do I need to just buy that movie again?
