80029940 error?

41 replies 8498 views Edited Dec 18, 2007
After update 2.10 last night I tried to watch Spiderman 3 blu ray and received error message 80029940.  I can watch the featurette disk #2 but not the movie itself.  There will be a lot of unhappy PS3 fans on xmas morning if they cant watch the new movie that came with the bundle.. Any suggestions how to fix this?

Re: 80029940 error?

Jan 18, 2008
I recently did the v2.10 (I think that was how it was listed) software update and this is the first time since then that I have tried to play a Blu Ray DVD. So I get two movies from Netflix one was 28 weeks later so I popped it in and try to play the movie but it just comes up with the error message and fault code (which means what SONY????) So thinking ok it could be the disk I put in the other one Delta Farce it did the same thing. I am not convinced it isn't a software issue and if the Blu Ray DVD's are that sensitive to shipping then there is gonna be big problems since these movies aren't that old and I have had no problems in the past with Blu Ray. Also aren't the games in Blu Ray? I can play my PS3 games with no issues so what's the deal? I am currently formatting my PS3 (the long format) and will hopefully reload software to see if I can get it to play. I guess it is the first thing they will suggest or recommend when contacting SONY via phone.... Until then I am a little pissed off that I got these movies with no other way to watch them. Also I was still able to play regular DVD with no problem ...
end of rant...

Hope others start posting maybe we can get some info or a fix.

well the only thing I have come up with is that the firmware update for the PS3 version 2.10 has a conflict with certian Blueray discs....and the format of these certian discs causes an error....just guess we have to wait for the new firmware update.

Re: 80029940 error?

Feb 3, 2008
i have been getting BD's from Blockbuster online now for about a month or so, and ive watched about 20 or so in that time. got 'the shining' today and poped it in. played fine. no issues untill about 2:10:36 into the movie then it locked up and my time index went to 2:36:00 and would not do anything else... pretty much locked up like my ps2 use to do with burned movies way back in 02. i exited the playback to the PS3 menus and tried to load the disk again and got the "this video cannot be played (80029940)". so i ejected the disk and tried again... and it began to play! wow kul (or so i thought) i skipped back to where i was in the movie and it played for about 2 sec and did the same thing. so im thinking odd and did a shutdown for 5 min. restarted system got the message again (2 more times) and then it played it again, only to lock up the playback when i tried to skp ahead. after about 1 min of letting it sit to try to find my chpater it restarted the movie via  a redscreen (of death maybee??? sadly no MS text included) then displayed the copywrighted material bit and went to the 'top menu'

At this point im thinking this is a HW SW or FW issue. its the only thing i can think of. becuase the disk is imaculate, no scratches, i clean all disks before i play them. i think this is SW HW FW issue also because i have about 30 or so BD movies on my shelves and have not had any issues with any of them, no issues with mail order BD's either, AND this one plays to a certain point but at the same time gives the error message.

So SONY,, WHAT GIVES????? "we the people" would like to know what the issue is and if there is a fix in the works, dont GIVE the XBboys ammunition to use against you and us please. keep us informed in our PSNetwork emails about issues like this, for the $$$ we throw down i think its the least we deserve.

I know this is a little old, but I just got the 80029940 error on the BD move 300.  Tried a couple of times.  Then I went to System and let it check for an update.  Found 2.35 and installed.  Not sure what it was before, but I seem to get updates all the time so I thought I was current.  Anyway, after the update the movie plays fine.  Hmmm, kinda like Windows, you gotta keep those updates current.

Re: 80029940 error?

Just got this error trying to watch 'i, robot', and got it last night watching the john mayer BD.  also during the john mayer, it locked up during one of the songs a couple of times, before i upgraded to 2.41 it worked fine.  i was able to launch 'i, robot' last night, and the menu was jumping like i was trying to play a racing game on a 386.  what gives?

edit:  after rebooting the machine, it gave me the error again, then loaded the movie, played just fine up until 1:26:00, then started skipping, then stopped while searching for a point where it would work again.  the only thing i haven't tried is reformatting the HD, which i'm putting off until i get a 500gb, which is looking like is going to be pretty soon.  stupid $600 pieces of crap.  or i could just blame 2.4
