You could also get a Codebreaker or AR Max from Walmart or anyplace that sells them.

Besides giving you infinite health and bullets. It also lets you copy and manage files from your memcard to a USB thumb drive. When that fills up just copy the files to your PC. It'll work for both versions of the PS2 unlike the HDD, and it's easier to find.

Best of all I've seen it at walmart.com for $17.82  http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=1792252

You can't save game directly to the HDD, maybe a few games can.  Just need to read the back of the game case.   You could copy saved game file to the HDD to free up some space.

The HDD only comes with FFXI. You can copy files from your memory card to the HDD with the PS2 Browser.

Either way you will be transferring them back and forth, since almost no American PS2 games can read or write to the HDD for saving. You either transfer saves to the HDD to store them and back to the card to use them, or transfer them to your computer with a Code Breaker to store them, and back to the Memory Card to use them. Code Breaker is $20 and works with almost any USB flash drive you may already have, while the HDD has a MSRP of $100, and isn't compatible with newer PS2 models.
